Music Therapy
Music therapy, one of the expressive therapies, is the use of listening, playing and personalizing music as a form of therapy, other expressive therapies being art therapy, drama therapy and poetry therapy.
The idea of music as a healing modality dates back to the beginnings of history. In more recent times, it has been used in the treatment of learning disabilities, psychiatry and geriatrics as well as in palliative care settings to enhance:
• quality of life,
• motor skills,
• social/interpersonal development (isolation, loneliness, boredom),
• cognitive development (neurological impairments, disorientation, confusion),
• emotional health (depression, anxiety, anger, fear, frustration),
• self-awareness, and
• spiritual development (lack of spiritual connection, need for spiritually-based rituals).
Aside from massage therapy, music therapy is one of the most popular alternative treatments used to promote emotional and physical well-being.
